Head and Spine Injuries Practice Test

A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury that can result from a blow to the head or a jolt to the body that causes the brain to move rapidly within the skull. Altered mental status, including confusion or disorientation, is a hallmark symptom of a concussion, as it reflects the brain’s temporary functional impairment. Individuals may experience difficulty processing information, memory issues, and an unsteady mental state. These cognitive effects are crucial indicators for medical professionals assessing the severity of the injury and its potential impact on a person's daily functioning.

While severe headache, nausea and vomiting, and difficulty speaking are also symptoms associated with concussions, the altered mental status is particularly significant as it indicates how the brain is responding to the injury, making it a key symptom for evaluation and diagnosis.
